STATEMENT

I paint landscape two-dimensionally.

Imagery from scrolls, textiles, and decorative wallpaper combine multiple time periods upon a single surface. Aqueous pours and vintage patterns quicken the transitions between them, compressing space even further. The work resembles collage, but is painting.

Color and material reflect where each painting is made. Warmer climes brighten the palette and thin paint to the consistency of ink, while in the city color neutralizes and textures intensify.

Acrylic on linen forms a type of plastiglomerate and the overlay of décor and abstraction amplifies a mediated view of nature. Flows of color release gravity and figure/ground relationships into a living, breathing landscape.

BIOGRAPHY

Elisabeth Condon's paintings overlap natural and built environments. They fold references to scroll painting and the decorative wallpapers of her childhood home into multi-layered landscapes.

Her work has been recognized by the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, and a Florida Individual Artist Fellowship. Her paintings are held in the collections of Tampa Museum of Art, Perez Art Museum Miami, Hudson River Museum, United States Embassy Beijing, and numerous private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Expanding her vision into the urban environment, Condon produces public art works such as Urban Idyll, commissioned by MTA Art & Design Percent for Art for the NYCT Astoria-Ditmars Blvd. Station in Queens, and Lattice Views, commissioned by Norte Maar in Highland Park.

Condon holds degrees from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago (MFA) and Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design, Los Angeles (BFA). She was Associate Professor at the University of South Florida for eleven years. Born in Los Angeles, Condon now lives and works in New York, NY and Tampa, FL.
